Garment Sewing Machine

The Sewing machine is essential for garment making. Various types of stitching are done with the help of sewing components. Different types of stitching are done by different sewing machines. All of the sewing machines are not the same in model and functions. But all have a common structure.

Parts Of Garment Sewing Machine And Their Functions

The basic components of a sewing machine are given below.

  • Head
  • Horizontal Arm
  • Vertical Arm
  • Bed Plate
  • Working Width
  • Working Height
  • Spool Pin

Garment Sewing Machine

The following parts are available in a sewing machine. I have illustrated the functions of each sewing machine parts step by step. They are –

Bed Plate

The main function of the bedplate is to stabilize the sewing machine to fit it in a permanent place.

Spool Pin

The spool pin of the sewing machine holds the spool of thread.

Thread Guide

A thread guide is used to guide the thread during sewing. Besides, the thread guide is responsible for properly guiding the threads from the spool pin to the hole of a needle. Thread guide basically is a small part of a machine that has a hole inside,

Tension Disc

Tension Disc is used to control the tension on the top thread therefore a thread tension dial is used. The tension discs are also used to control the thread tension to give proper stitch on the fabric.

Take Up Lever

The top thread passes through the thread take-up lever during the sewing operation. When thread take-up lever moves up and down with the needle.

Needle

The needle is basically used for sewing. However, a needle is a sharp metal that has a small hole (eye) through which a thread goes through.

Needle Plate or Throat Plate

A needle plate or throat plate is a semi-circular disc with a hole that allows the needle to pass through it. Also, we are known about Needle Bar.

Balance Wheel

The balance wheel is generally used to run the machine manually.

Bobbin

Threads are wired in a bobbin which is used for sewing.

Bobbin Case or Bobbin Holder

A bobbin case is used to hold the bobbin during sewing.

Bobbin Cover

To cover the bobbin and bobbin case in the machine is the main task of the bobbin cover.

Bobbin Winder Spindle

The main function of the bobbin winder spindle is to winds the thread mechanically from the spool to the bobbin.

Presser Foot

A presser foot is generally used for holding the fabric in the right place on the throat plate. As result, the fabric cannot slip around.

Presser Foot Lifter

To raise or lower the foot level is the main function of a presser foot lifter.

Stitch Selector:

Stitch selector or pattern selector determines the stitch type such as straight stitches, embroidery stitch, or zig-zag stitch

Stitch Regulator

Stitch regulators are of two types. One is a stitch width regulator other is a stitch length regulator. However, the stitch width regulator allows the user to control the width of the stitches on the fabric. When, the range on this machine is from 0 to 4 (0=the shortest stitch, 4=the longest). Besides, the stitch length regulator allows the user to control the length of the stitches on the fabric. In fact, the range on this machine is from 0 to 4 (0=the shortest stitch, 4=the longest).

Stitch Indicator Plate

Stitch Indicator plate determines the stitching type where different stitching number is written.

Feed Dog

To feed the fabric in the sewing direction is the main task of the feed dog.

Face Plate Thumb Screw

The main function of the faceplate thumb screw is used for attaching the faceplate of a sewing machine.

Reverse Lever:

To depress the lever which enables the mechanism to move backward or in reverse is the main task of the reverse lever.

Foot Pedal

Foot Pedal is used to perform different tasks such as starting, running, and stopping the machine.

The above components are listed here that are common for hand sewing machines, treadle sewing machines, or electric sewing machines.
