Hand Stitch
Stitching is done for attaching objects to the fabric or joining various fabric parts through the sewing machine. Stitching is done with the help of sewing threads and needles. In this stitching process, other sewing components also help for proper stitching.
Hand stitching is generally done by hand but in modern times, hand stitching is done by the hand stitching sewing machine. According to British Standard 3870 and ISO 4915:1991, hand stitch is classified as Class 200.
Types of Hand Stitch
The following are the types of hand stitches and their uses in garment manufacturing. They are-
Straight or Running Stitch
Straight or running stitch is mainly used for gathering, mending, and tucking.
Basting or Tacking Stitch
It is one of the important types of hand stitch. It is mainly used for tacking and holding seams. Additionally, It can be used as a temporary stitch.
Backstitch
Backstitch is mainly used for outline shapes for embroidery designs and attach fabrics.
Catch stitch or Cross Stitch
Catch stitch or cross stitch is used for hem sewing also used for seam allowance and lining apparel.
Slip Stitch or Blind Stitch
It is used to join two pieces with stitch thread that is invisible. It is also used for hem.
Blanket Stitch or Buttonhole Stitch
It is used for enclosing the raw edges of heavy fabrics. It is a decorative stitch type.
Fell Stitch
It is an applique seam type. It is used for stitching lace. This stitch is used to make millinery work and clothing. It attaches hatbands to hat and hat bodies to brims.
Overcast Stitch
Overcast stitch is used to enclose the raw edges of the fabric.
Whip Stitch
Whipstitch has varieties uses in apparel manufacturing such as applique making, quilting, making jeans garments, hemming the sides of carpets, and closing the sides of pillows and cushions.
Features of Hand Stitch:
The following are the features of hand stitches. They are-
- Firstly, hand stitch is passed completely from one side to the other.
- Secondly, hand stitch is originally made by hand but now can be formed by sewing machine.
- Lastly, the appearance of face and back are same.
Uses of Hand Stitch in Garment Manufacturing:
Hand stitch is popular with the common people who like to sew different parts of fabric none commercially. In the village side of many countries; people used needles and threads for sewing. Anyhow, the following are the using scope of hand stitch.
- At the firdt place, hand stitch is used for decorative purposes.
- It is specially used in collar, pocket, front placket, shoulder etc.
In apparel manufacturing, hand stitch is not so used as chain stitch. But hand stitch has a demand to the common people.
