Sizing: Types and Application Methods


Sizing is called the heart of weaving. Therefore, it is the process by which a protective adhesive coating is applied to a yarn surface. It increases the efficiency of the weaving process.

Types of Sizing

The following is the sizing process. They are-

  • Pure Sizing: Application of size ingredients up to 10%.
  • Light Sizing: Application of size ingredients from 11% to 15%.
  • Medium Sizing: Application of size ingredients from 16% to 20%.
  • Heavy Sizing: Application of size ingredients above 40%.

Sizing Application Methods or Techniques

There are different application processes by which size materials are applied to yarn surfaces. The following are the size application methods:. They are-

Drying System

After the application of size materials to the yarn surface, it needs to dry to fix the size on the yarn. Following is the drying system. They are-

  1. Two-cylinder drying
  2. Multi-cylinder drying
  3. Hot air drying
  4. Infrared drying
  5. Combined drying

Technical Changes of Yarn Due to Sizing

After the application of size ingredients to the yarn surface, the following changes occur:. They are:

  • Firstly, size ingredients increase the breaking strength.
  • Secondly, it increases stiffness.
  • Thirdly, it increases abrasion resistance.
  • Size ingredients also increase elasticity.
  • Therefore, it increases smoothness.
  • Increase the actual diameter, but decrease the apparent diameter.
  • After that, it decreases hairiness.
  • Then, it decreases in extension.
  • Lastly, size ingredients decrease elastistatic charge.

In sum, the size ingredients apply during beam preparation. If sizing is done perfectly, then it is possible to get a good, qualified woven fabric. Moreover, the quality of the sizing depends on the quality of the ingredients. So, it is important to use the best-quality ingredients during the sizing process.
