Mercerization Process of Cotton Fabric

Mercerization Process of Cotton Fabric

Mercerization process of cotton fabric is done after the bleaching operation. Bleaching is enough to prepare the fabrics for dyeing and printing, but mercerizing is done to add some advantage to the fabric. The luster and strength of the fabric increase during the mercerizing process. Cotton mercerizing is the most popular operation.

Stages of Mercerization Process

The merchandising of cotton is done in three basic stages. They are:

A. Mercerization Process in the Yarn stage

  1. Hank form
  2. Package form
  3. Beam form

B. Mercerization Process in Fabric Stage

  1. White fabric
  2. Woven fabric
  3. Knitted fabric

C. Mercerization Process in Dyed Fabric Stage

Methods of the Mercerization Process:

J-Box can mercerize yarn or fabric. Mercerizing is a continuous process. At first, the fabric is hanked by the roller in a J-Box. Fabric is passed through a solution that contains 23% NaOH at room temperature. Fabric is passed for 4-5 minutes. Then the fabric is squeezed by the squeezed roller, and washing is done in a bath at 85 degrees Celsius. Then it is also immersed in an acid solution bath that contains 5% CH3COOH. After that, it is washed in another bath at 85 degrees Celsius. In this way, we can get mercerized fabric.

Flow Chart of the Mercerization Process of Textiles:

For white-finished goods, mercerizing is done in the following sequence:

Fabric after scouring and bleaching process

Padding in alkaline liquor

Washing

Neutralization in acid solution

Washing

Drying

A marketable fabric can be produced in different ways. But day by day, man wants to wear that type of fabric, which has all possible facilities. Mercerization Process is done in different types of machines. Generally mercerizing is done in a dyeing machine. Yarn and Fabric Mercerizing are nearly similar.

The different well-known buyers want to get mercerized products. They strictly follow the qualities of the product. After mercerizing, fabrics become more suitable for dyeing, printing, or for white goods to be ready for delivery to the buyer.

    hello sir,
my question is that why we perform mercerisation process in hot and cold temperatures only and why not at moderate temperature? we can improve the drawbacks of cold mercerisation by increasing the temperature up to some extent. so there would be no loss of energy as well as productivity will increase.
    please analyse and reply soon.
