Exploring the Jute Industries In Bangladesh

Jute Fiber

The golden color is a favorite of many people. I also like the golden color. Also, you may hear about the pride of Bangladesh, which is named Golden Fibers. Yes, I say about jute, which is so-called. Jute industries in Bangladesh play a vital role in the economy of the country.

Jute is a vegetable fiber that can be spun into different types of jute cloth and decorative products. It brought much-needed foreign currency to the impoverished nation. However, it lost its luster after synthetic materials like polythene and plastics were introduced in the 1980s.

Once upon a time, it was the principle of exporting goods from Bangladesh; most foreign currencies were earned from this sector before liberation, and it was sold as raw and finished goods. Not only its golden color but also its currency earnings make it so named. The environment in Bangladesh is suitable for cultivating it. Bangladeshi farmers cultivated jute with happiness, but what is the present situation?

After the liberation war in Bangladesh, this sector started to lose its past position. Day by day, it was denied by different governments. The different governments took different policies, which made this sector unstable. Due to a lack of good policy, it is now in the worst position. So, it is the demand of time to know about the history of jute industries in Bangladesh.

A good governmental policy can bring this sector into its glorious position. I hope all the political parties will place emphasis on this sector; in fact, they were elected by the people.

We know that jute is a natural fiber for this reason it is not harmful like other synthetic fibers to the environment. Once upon a time, people used jute goods for their daily needs. But when synthetic goods came into people’s hands, they started to use them instead of natural fiber-made goods.

Jute Goods

Different jute goods are available in the market, such as bags, sacks, CVC, etc. Also, different types of geotextiles are made from this jute. In China, they blend jute with cotton fiber to produce yarn, which is used to make different cloth which are expensive. I will discuss this in my next blog.

Jute products are produced in jute mills. Two types of jute mills are available: twine mills, which produce only yarn and export it; and jute composite mills, where both yarn and finished goods are produced.

Here, most of the jute mills are powered by the private sector. There is a government corporation called Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC). There are about 26 jute mills that are now run by BJMC. Millions of people are involved in this sector. So government should consider it before taking any harmful decisions. I will elaborate on it in my next post.

However, this sector has a great future if everyone takes proper care of jute and jute goods.
