Types Of Sewing Thread and Their Properties

Sewing Thread

Sewing thread is the main element in making apparel. After cutting the fabrics, different cut parts are joined by sewing. Sewing threads may be made of natural, man-made, or combined fibers. Sewing thread is manufactured by the combination of short fibers or by continuous filament yarn. Twisting is done to form a sewing thread. Various types of sewing thread are used for sewing; all of them have their own characteristics, which are important to know.

Types of Sewing Thread

The following are the classifications of sewing thread. They are-

  1. Sewing thread classified on the basis of fiber types: Cotton, Polyester, Nylon, etc.
  2. On the basis of thread construction: 2ply, 3ply, Core spun thread
  3. On the basis of the finish applied

Properties Of Core Spun, Cotton And Polyester Sewing Thread

The following are the properties of core-spun, cotton, and polyester sewing thread. They are-

Properties of the Core Spun Thread

In more than 95% of cases, 100% spun polyester sewing thread is used in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and other countries. The following are the properties of core-spun thread: They are-

  • Firstly, a strong thread with excellent sewability
  • Secondly, thread has a filament of polyester or nylon as a core, and cotton is wrapped around it.
  • Thirdly, cost more than a regular thread.
  • Lastly, have good durability as well.

Properties of Cotton Sewing Thread

The following are the properties of cotton sewing thread. They are-

  • Firstly, cotton sewing thread is made from cotton fibers.
  • Secondly, have excellent sewability because fibers are not seriously affected by the heat generated by needles during sewing.
  • Thirdly, cotton threads are not highly durable and have a tendency to shrink when apparel is washed.
  • Lastly, mercerized cotton threads sew well and have lustures appearance but shrink slightly when wetted.

Properties of Polyester Sewing Thread

The following are the properties of polyester sewing thread. They are-

  • Firstly, polyester sewing thread is made from polyester filaments or fibers.
  • Secondly, threads are highly durable and are hot affected in washing or dry-cleaning.
  • Thirdly, they have excellent dimensional stability.
  • Also have a high level of resistance to abrasion.

Sewing Thread Classification On the Basis of Finish Applied:

The following are the classification of sewing thread on the basis of finish applied. They are-

Lubricants are commonly used 3% to 15% on the basis of weight.

Special finishes are:

  1. Water repellent finish
  2. Flame proof finish
  3. Anti-Bacterial finish
  4. Anti-mildew

Among all of the sewing threads, core-spun is widely used in the apparel manufacturing process. Before sewing, one should ensure the sewability and durability of sewing thread.

So, chose your sewing thread and sew the t-shirt, polo-shirt, trousers, and much more apparel.
