Projectile Weaving Machine

A projectile loom is a shuttleless loom. Chiefly, it uses widely in fabric production. In this projectile loom, the filling of yarn is done by using a small metal device resembling a bullet in appearance with a clamp for gripping the yarn at one end, which is then propelled into and through the shed. Besides, In this projectile loom machine, the weft insertion is carried out by a small clamp projectile, which number depends on the weaving fabric width and which with its grippers takes out the weft yarn from big cross-wound bobbins and inserts it into the shed and always in the same direction. The projectile loom has a high-speed production than the rapier loom.

As I have noted, the projectile weaving machine was invented in 1924, and in 1953 it was introduced to the market. Generally, the weft insertion system is the key feature of this machine. To illustrate, a bullet-like shuttle 90 mm long and weighing about 40 gm, technically named a gripper projectile is used here to insert the weft thread into the warp threads which gets motion by a metal torsion rod.

Functions of Projectile Weaving Loom Parts

The following are the functions of different parts of the projectile. They are-

Torsion Bar (A):

A crucial part of the projectile loom is the torsion bar. Torsion bars’ main purpose is to supply torsional force to regulate the picking mechanism’s movement during the weaving process. Torsion bars also provide accurate and constant picking action during the fabric manufacturing process by storing energy and releasing it in a regulated manner.

Picking Shaft (B):

The main purpose of the picking shaft is to retain and rotate the pickers. It provides rotating force from the machine’s drive system to the pickers during the weft insertion procedure, allowing them to move across the breadth of the loom.

Picking Lever (C):

The picking lever is a crucial component of the projectile loom. The picking lever, on the other hand, links the picking shaft to the picking shoe and transforms the picking shaft’s rotating action into a linear motion, enabling the pickers to move smoothly and precisely over the shed.

Picking Shoe (D):

The picking shoe, which is an essential component of the projectile loom, holds the pickers and regulates their direction.  The picking shoe travels linearly, propelling the pickers through the shed, and enabling exact weft insertion.

Picking Shaft Lever (E):

The force from the picking lever is transferred to the picking shaft via the picking shaft lever. The picking shaft receives rotating motion from this shaft lever, which functions as a connecting link to transform the linear motion of the picking lever.

Toggle Plates (F):

The movement of the picking lever and the picking shoe is controlled by toggle plates. However, they offer stability and guarantee that the picking motion is regulated and reliable when weaving. In a nutshell, toggle plates aid in preserving the correct timing and synchronization between the various parts of the projectile loom.

Picking Cam (I):

The picking cam is a unique cam mechanism created to regulate the timing and movement of the picking mechanism. The pickers’ rate of acceleration, deceleration, and dwell duration are all controlled by this during weft insertion. However, attaining precise and effective weft insertion requires attention to the design and profile of the picking cam.

Oil Brake (L):

The projectile loom’s oil brake is a crucial component that regulates the picking motion’s acceleration and deceleration during weaving. Oil brakes’ main job is to regulate braking pressure to avoid abrupt stops or jerky motions and to ensure smooth and accurate weft insertion. In addition to this, the oil brake system aids in preserving the machine’s overall performance and stability.
