Color Fastness To Washing and Measuring Procedure

Color Fastness To Washing

The “colorfastness” of a colored textile is defined as its resistance to these changes when subjected to particular conditions. However, it follows that colorfastness must be specified in terms of these changes and expressed in terms of their magnitude.

Color Fastness To Washing and Measuring Procedure

Color fastness to wash is indeed an important test for ensuring the fastness of the colored material. Basically, it is done in the dyeing lab. Besides, the testing procedure can vary depending on the measuring procedure. In the quality assurance system, a record is maintained significantly for each lot of dyed goods or finished goods. Additionally, the Computer Color Matching System (CCMS) is used to save the record.

Required Materials:

The following materials are required for the wash-fastness test:. The following materials are standard for wash fastness measurement.

  1. Sample size: 40 x 100 mm
  2. Multi-fiber at 40 x 100 mm
  3. ECE detergent (WOB) 4 g/L
  4. Sodium Perborate (Na2BO3.H2O2-1g/L)-1g/L
  5. Distilled water
  6. Normal, cold water
  7. Steel balls

Required Instruments:

Various types of instruments are used for it. The following are the important ones:. They are-

  1. Rota wash
  2. Scissor
  3. Stitch machine

Colorfastness to Washing Measurement Procedure:

Colorfastness to wash is an offline quality assurance system. In the following way, colorfastness to wash is carried out.

  1. Firstly, cut the sample and multi-fiber at 40 x 100 mm.
  2. Secondly, 50 ml of ECE detergent (WOB) & 50 ml of sodium perborate are taken with the sample.  For marks & Spencer, the solution is calculated using the following formula: (Sample fabric + Multi-fiber weight) x 50 ml.
  3. Thirdly, the sample is kept at 60 °C for 30 minutes in a rota wash machine.
  4. After that, rinse the sample twice with cold water.
  5. Then, dry at 60 °C by hanging or by flat iron pressing, but the temperature should not be more than 150 °C.
  6. Lastly, dry the specimen and observe the change in shade & degree of staining that is measured on the Grey Scale & Staining Scale.

So, we should be careful during the measurement of the washability of textile materials.
