In apparel manufacturing; various terms are used to express the specific task. Here, I have given some apparel terms and definitions which will help you.

Different Apparel Terms and Definitions:

Product Package: A group of paper sheets which contain the followings is called product package. It is essential to develop a sample garment.

  1. Apparel design and sketches
  2. Apparel measurements
  3. Stitches
  4. Trimmings and details
  5. Order quantity and size ration
  6. Fabric specification and details
  7. Packing instructions
  8. Order details
  9. Etc

Pattern: The individual part of apparel which is shaped by hard drawing paper is called pattern.

Working Pattern: The pattern set which is used to make sample garment, that is called working pattern. Sample garment generally made of M.S = 1 set.

Sample Garment: The garment which represents the huge quantity of garments that is called sample garment.

Approved Sample: The sample which is approved by buyer is called approved sample. Generally 3 pieces sample are made for approval of buyer. 2 pieces are sending to buyer and 1 piece is for counter sample. After approval of sample; buyer take one piece and send approved sample to the manufacturer. The merchandiser sends it for bulk production in the production unit.

Counter Sample: Counter sample is one kind of approved sample which is not signed by buyer is called counter sample. This sample is hanged on the sewing floor for smooth production.

Pattern Grading: Stepwise increase or stepwise decrease of master pattern is called pattern grading. Such XXX → XS → S → M.Set → L → XL → XXL.

Production Pattern: The pattern which is used for bulk production, those are called production pattern.

Apparel Types || Difference Between Bespoke Garment And Ready To Wear Garment

The fabric which we wear, that’s name vary according to the country. In USA, finished fabric is called Apparel or Ready Made Garment (RMG), in UK It is called garment and in Germany it is called clothing. This three name is generally use for fabric trading and they are internationally recognized. Most of the countries of the world follow these three terms but in sub continent people is popular with the name garment than other names.

Apparel Types: Two systems are used to make apparel. They are-

  1. Bespoke Garment: Bespoke garment is a tailoring system to make apparel. It is an individual choice garment. The design and materials of the garment is chosen by the client.
  2. Ready To Wear garment: This type of garment is make industrially. There have no individual choice of garment in the ready to wear garment system.

Difference between Bespoke Garment and Ready to Wear Garment: The differences between bespoke garment and ready to wear garment are given below.

1. Bespoke Garment is a tailoring system. 1. Ready to wear garment is a industrial system.
2. It is clients individual choice. 2. No choice of individual clients.
3. Individual body measurement. 3. Standard body measurement.
4. Only one size. 4. For all size ( S, M, L, XL, XXL etc ).
5. Only one man is enough to make a complete garment. 5. A group of people are required to make a complete garment.
6. It takes more time also expensive than ready to wear garment. 6. It takes less time and not expensive than bespoke wear garment.
7. Garment is produced by individual Material and design. 7. All the garment in a lot has same material and design.
8. Generlly it is done for local peoples purpose. 8. Most of the times, it is done for exporting purpose.
